RICHARDSON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team improved to 23-19 on the season with a 7-4 win at UT-Dallas (27-10) on Tuesday. The Rams pounded out 13 hits and Hayden Lackey notched his fifth save of the season en route to the victory.
Back-to-back doubles from Mark Perez and Jake Jackson put the Comets on top 1-0 in the second inning. The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth with a rally that started with a single from Billie Hicks, a double from Josh Vander Hey, and a triple from Chris Palmer.
The Comets answered immediately with a run in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 3-2. Singles from Jason Diaz, Zach Archer, and Travis Clifford led to two Texas Wesleyan runs in the eighth. Again, the Comets answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Vander Hey led off the ninth with a home run and Palmer followed with a double. Palmer later scored on a single from Diaz to bring the score to 7-3. After consecutive singles in the bottom of the ninth, Hayden Lackey entered the contest with the tying run on deck and shut the door.
For Lackey it was his fifth save of the season, just one shy of tying the Texas Wesleyan single season record. Caleb Thomas improved to 3-4 after scattering eight hits over seven innings and allowing three runs.
Diaz and Palmer each went 3-4 at the plate for the Rams while Palmer finished a perfect 3-3.
The Rams return to action this weekend when they travel to Odessa, TX, to take on UT-Permian Basin in a three-game RRAC series. Friday’s opening game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
