FORT WORTH, TX: Three championships were decided with the conclusion of the NAIA Region VI Men’s Golf Championship hosted by Texas Wesleyan University at The Links at WaterChase on Tuesday. Oklahoma City won the Region VI Championship which comes with an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship and, in doing so, also took the Sooner Athletic Conference Title. Meanwhile Texas Wesleyan won its third consecutive Red River Athletic Conference Championship.
Oklahoma City led the field of 12 teams with a score of 851. A final round 281 was enough to overtake Oklahoma Christian for the lead. The Eagles finished second at 858. Southern Nazarene and Wayland Baptist followed in third and fourth, and Texas Wesleyan finished fifth, but first among three participating Red River Athletic Conference schools, with a score of 887.
Oklahoma City’s Daniel Mitchell shot a final round 69 to take the individual medal with a total score of 210.
Each of the top six individual scores came from Oklahoma City and Oklahoma Christian players. Texas Wesleyan was led by a strong performance from Lance Vasquez who shot 217 and finished in a tie for seventh.
Reino Deetlefs and Ryan Stephens also cracked the top-20 for the Rams with scores of 221 (T15) and 222 (T18) respectively.
The Rams will now have to wait and see if they draw a bid to the NAIA National Tournament which will be held in Olathe, KS, May 24-27.
