WACO, TX: Brooke McNabb of Texas Wesleyan University and Krissie Conner of Houston Baptist University (Texas) earned recognition as the Red River Athletic Conference Softball Co-Players of the Week for April 10-16, while Laura Hess of HBU was named the RRAC Softball Pitcher of the Week for the same dates.
McNabb, a sophomore utility player from Fort Worth, Texas, connected on three home runs and six RBIs on the week for TWU. McNabb was 6-for-18 batting for the week, but she heated up with a homer and two RBIs in an 8-2 loss to HBU before going 3-for-6 with a pair of homers in a doubleheader sweep of College of the Southwest (N.M.). She drove in three runs in the late game against CSW. TWU remains in second place in the RRAC standings at 14-4 with a mark of 26-14 on the season.
Conner, a junior third baseman from Brenham, Texas, posted a .600 batting average this week (6-for-10) with three walks and five RBIs to lead HBU to a four wins. She went 3-for-5 in a sweep of TWU then drove in three of HBU’s runs with a single and double in a 9-0 opening win over Northwood. Conner added a run scored and an RBI as HBU defeated Northwood again, 8-2, in the second game on Saturday. The Huskies remain atop the RRAC standings at 15-1 with a 25-7 record overall.
Hess, a senior pitcher from Pasadena, Texas, recorded two shutout wins last week while allowing only three hits. She tossed a two-hitter to knock off TWU, 1-0, then held Northwood to one hit in five innings for a 9-0 victory. In all, Hess struck out 21 hitters and walked five in the two starts. In the process, she became only the second pitcher in HBU history to exceed 700 career strikeouts, and she needs 24 more to surpass the school record held by Jennifer Elias.
Junior outfielder Jenness Wines of Northwood University (Texas) was an additional player nominee, while Rachel Lamont of Texas Wesleyan University and Northwood’s Kayla Maddox were nominated in the pitcher category.
