FORT WORTH, TX: The 2005-2006 school year has possibly been the most successful athletic year that Texas Wesleyan has had in the 116-year history of the University. Very few collegiate athletic programs in the country can boast that fully half of their teams have won conference championships and advanced to regional tournaments, while half of those continued on to national tournaments. Texas Wesleyan has already accomplished that and still has three very talented teams in season.
Thursday night, Texas Wesleyan athletes, coaches, and supporters gathered in Martin Hall to pay tribute to a banner year. The 05-06 school year began with three consecutive Red River Athletic Conference Championships. For the first time in RRAC history, both the men’s and women’s soccer champions came from the same institution. The volleyball team capped the fall by not only winning the conference regular season with a perfect 16-0 record and winning the conference tournament, but advancing to the NAIA Elite Eight for the second consecutive season as well.
That left a tough act to follow, but the men’s basketball team made history when they entered the NAIA National Tournament as the 27th seed and won the program’s first National Championship. The women’s basketball team also had a successful season, posting a 13-7 conference mark, and finishing fourth in the RRAC standings.
Earlier this week, the men’s golf team won its third consecutive conference title and the school’s fourth RRAC Title this year. The Rams are also ranked 3rd in the country and are awaiting a possible at large bid to the NAIA National Tournament.
In baseball, the Rams have shown signs of brilliance, even pushing Texas Tech to the brink before falling 12-11 in 12 innings. The team is currently fourth in the conference’s North Division, but could move as high as second with two conference series left to play.
In softball, the Lady Rams broke the NAIA record of 45 home runs in a season midway through the campaign. That record now stands at 60 home runs and counting. The Rams are second in the conference with a record of 14-4 and four conference contests left on the docket.
In total, Texas Wesleyan has won four conference championships, one national title, set 21 school records, had 23 All-Conference selections, five conference positional Players of the Year, two conference Coaches of the Year, one regional Coach of the Year, one National Coach of the Year, three All-Americans, and four All-America Scholar Athletes. And they are not done yet.
