RAMS BATS BREAK OUT: POUND BC 20-7
May 4, 2006

HOUSTON, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (30-19) pounded out 19 hits and scored a season-high 20 runs in a 20-7 route of Bacone College (28-18) in second round action of the Red River Athletic Conference tournament on Thursday.

The win was also Texas Wesleyan’s 30th of the season, giving the Rams three 30 win campaigns in the last four years.

The Rams put the game away early, scoring six runs on five hits in a second inning that was highlighted by a two-run homer from Billie Hicks and a two-run triple from Jason Diaz.

Jeremy Howard drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, and, later in the same inning, the freshman cracked his third home run, and second grand slam of the year.  In all, the Rams pushed across eight more runs on six hits in the fourth.

Bacone scored five in the top of the fifth, but it was too late, and the Rams were just getting started.  Texas Wesleyan scored one more in the fifth, and used a three-run homer from Antoine Cole in the seventh to score five more.

Weston Wood (8-2) earned the win after allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits, while striking out four in five innings of work.

Jason Diaz led the Rams by going 4-6 with two RBI and three runs scored.  Travis Clifford went 3-5 while Hicks and Cole each added two hits and three RBI.  After not homering in the regular season, Cole, a sophomore outfielder, has hit his first two Texas Wesleyan home runs in his first two Red River Tournament games.

The win sets up a showdown with 15th ranked Houston Baptist tomorrow morning.  The Huskies lead the all-time series between the two schools 15-10 after taking each of their last five meetings.  Texas Wesleyan will attempt to reverse that trend with tomorrow’s first pitch scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
