WACO, TX: The Red River Athletic Conference has announced the final standings for the RRAC All-Sports Award. Texas Wesleyan University posted a best ever finish of runner-up. The award is given annually to the RRAC member institution that performed best across the conference’s sponsored sports in an academic year. Points were awarded to the top five teams in each sport and point totals for each school are determined as an average across the number of sports in which each school competes.
Texas Wesleyan University had a banner year in which it became the first RRAC School to win both the men’s and women’s soccer conference titles in addition taking its second consecutive volleyball championship. The Rams also reined in the conference title in men’s golf and placed second in the RRAC Baseball Tournament and softball regular season standings. Although Texas Wesleyan’s men’s basketball team finished second in the conference standings, they rebounded to win the NAIA National Championship, the first basketball title for the school and the first national championship for an RRAC member.
Houston Baptist won the award for the fifth consecutive year and seventh time overall. HBU won or tied for RRAC titles in four of the five sports in which it participates including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. The Huskies also finished as the runner-up in women’s volleyball.
Northwood University (Texas) finished third for the third consecutive year after registering all-sports points in eight of the nine sports in which they compete.
With conference championships in men’s cross country and women’s outdoor track & field, College of the Southwest (N.M.) placed fourth. Texas A&M International University in fifth place had two runner-up finishes (women’s basketball and women’s soccer) and three third-place teams, while University of Texas of the Permian Basin scored well across its 11 sports, highlighted by a runner-up team in men’s soccer.
Any RRAC-sanctioned sport with four or more teams and an official conference championship qualifies for the All-Sports totals. Sports with official conference champions include men’s and women’s cross country, men's and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's outdoor track and field, men’s golf, baseball and softball.
