RAMS HEADED TO NATIONALS
April 11, 2006

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team has received an at large bid to the 55th annual NAIA National Tournament in Olathe, KS.  The tournament will be held at Prairie Highlands Golf Course May 16-19.

The Rams have been ranked as high as third nationally, and won their third consecutive Red River Athletic Conference Championship in April.  They are currently rated third in Region VI and eighth in the nation.

Fans will be able to find updates from the tournament on the NAIA and Texas Wesleyan websites, www.naia.org or www.ramsports.net.

The 72-hole event consists of 144 players vying for the individual championship while 28 teams battle for the team title.

The Texas Wesleyan men’s golf program has qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 45 out of 52 years of membership, wining the title six times and finishing outside of the top-10 just twice.  The program has also produced nine individual medalists.

The Rams are looking to improve upon fifth place finishes in each of the last two seasons.  This season, they have returned three of the five players who competed in last year’s championship.  In addition, Reino Deetlefs and Justin Smith have each competed in two national championships.

“We’re obviously very excited about the opportunity,” said head coach Kevin Millikan.  “It comes down to who plays best in one week, and I like our chances.”
