PHOENIX, AZ: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team played 36 holes in the desert heat of Phoenix, AZ, on Monday. The team rallied in the second round of the Grand Canyon Classic at Estrella Mountain Ranch and sit in 6th place going into Tuesday’s third and final round.
CSU-Bakersfield leads the pack with a 36-hole score of 566, 8-under par. The Rams shot 294 and 290 for a total of 584.
CSU-Stanislaus’ Ryan Thornberry shot 69 and 68 for a 7-under par 137 to lead the individual competition.
The Rams found themselves in 11th place after the first 18, but, as the day stretched on, the Rams rallied. Mitch Hendon and Kevin Doskocil both shot under par in round two to lead a charge that lifted Texas Wesleyan to 6th place.
After two rounds, Hendon leads the rams with a card of 144 (74, 70), which puts him in 17th place. Doskocil sits in 22nd with a 145 (74, 71). Justin Smith and Graham McMonagel are tied for 39th with scores of 148. Lance Vasquez sits in 58th with a card of 152.
“I was proud of how well we played in the second eighteen,” said Head Coach Kevin Milikan. “It was very hot today, and we were out there for ten hours. Our stamina and concentration under those conditions were outstanding.”
The Rams will play the third and final round of the Grand Canyon Classic on Tuesday.
