MUSKOGEE, OK: The reigning RRAC and Region VI player of the week, Christian Villasenor, came up with another big game to lead the Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team over the Bacone College Warriors.
Villasenor finished with 2 goals and an assist . Ryan Landers added a goal and 2 assists, and the Rams came away with a 4-3 win in double-overtime.
Five yellow cards slowed Texas Weleyan down, and, early on, things were not going the Rams’ way. Bacone’s Kyle Touchette scored in the 6th and 27th minutes to put the Warriors’ on top 2-0. Villasenor got his team back in the contest with 13:27 remaining in the half on an assist from Ryan Landers. That 2-1 score would hold up at the break.
In the 64th minute Villasenor found Rene Mercado for the tying score. Three minutes later, the Ram’s leading scorer, Jose Melendez, was called for his second yellow card, and Texas Wesleyan would have to play the rest of the contest down a man. In the 71st minute, the Rams’ took a 3-2 lead when Seth Mullins hit Landers for a score, but three minutes later Mario Ivos knotted the game at three.
One overtime was not enough to finish off the thrilling contest. In the second overtime Villasenor ended the game with a golden goal in the 102nd minute on an assist from Landers.
“A good team will persevere and find a way to win on days like this when things are not going their way,” said Head Coach Steve Jones. “We hit a couple of posts and their keeper had some nice saves. I think the yellows came form a little bit of panic, and we needed to keep our composure. When we did settle down we played very well and got the job done on the road.”
With the win, the Rams remain on top of the RRAC standings at 4-0 (6-3 overall). Bacone fell to 2-7-1 overall and 0-1-1 in RRAC play.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Edmond, OK, to take on Oklahoma Christian University. That game is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a women’s game. |
