EDMOND, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s soccer team extended their school record winning streak to five games with a 3-2 overtime win over Oklahoma Christian on Saturday.
Texas Wesleyan (9-3) entered the game ranked 4th in Region VI while the Eagles (8-5-1) were ranked 5th.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first half. In the second half, the Eagles got an early goal and then went up 2-0 on a penalty kick. Jessica Carrion started the comeback when she scored on an assist from Brianna McKernon. With less than two minutes to play in regulation, McKernon found Nicole Richardson who hit the back of the net to send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, McKernon would come through again. After getting fouled in the box, she converted a penalty kick to lift the Rams to a big 3-2 win.
McKernon, a freshman from Mansfield, TX, matched her career-high with four points on a goal and two assists.
Head Coach Steve Jones was excited about the win, “This was a great win against a good team on the road especially considering that they were coming off a win and a tie against the number one and three teams in the region this week, and we had to come from behind in the second half.” Oklahoma Christian defeated top ranked Oklahoma City 2-1 on Monday and played to a 1-1 tie with 3rd ranked Northwestern Oklahoma State on Thursday.
The Lady Rams travel to Cedar Hill, TX, on Wednesday to take on RRAC rival Northwood. The Rams have won each of the last two meetings with the Knights. This season, Texas Wesleyan and Northwood are both undefeated in conference play. That game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
