WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team, ranked #1 in NAIA Region VI and 13th in the nation, traveled to Waxahachie where they swept a pair of matches on Tuesday. They Lady Rams defeated Mid-America Christian in the first match 3-0 (30-11, 30-10, 30-9). In the night-cap, the Rams defeated Southwestern Assemblies of God 3-0 in Red River Athletic Conference action with scores of 30-20, 30-14, and 30-26.
In the first ever meeting between the two schools, the Rams put together an impressive match against Mid-America Christian, winning each game by 19 points or more. Rachel Loftin and Sandra Ayala led the team with 14 kills while Misty Tarbet added 12. Brandi Hatcher had 9 aces, Whitney Johansen recorded 36 assists, and Susan Taylor notched 11 digs.
The Ram’s second match of the day featured the top two teams in the RRAC West division. The Lady Lions trailed Texas Wesleyan by just 1.5 games in the standings. The Rams started hot and took the first two games at 30-20 and 30-14. However, the Lady Lions would make the Rams fight for game three. After trailing 4-7, the Lady Lions rallied to take a 14-13, but the Lady Rams managed to rally and hold on for the 30-26 win.
Loftin put together another strong performance against the Lions with 15 kills and 5 blocks. Johansen had 32 assists, and Taylor added 18 digs.
With the pair of wins, the Lady Rams improved to 15-3 overall and 8-0 in conference play. Texas Wesleyan has won 14 consecutive matches and 39 consecutive games. They are currently three games short of tying the school record for consecutive game wins. They will take a shot at tying that record of 42 consecutive games, set last season, when they host UT-Permian Basin in RRAC action on Friday. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
