FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team took its 16th consecutive win with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-21) victory over College of the Southwest on Saturday. The Lady Rams have won each of their last 45 games, setting a new school record. The previous record of 44 was set last season.
Head Coach Rick Johansen was not surprised by the Lady Rams’ success. “These girls work hard for it, and I’m not surprised. Our girls play better the more interested they are. We’ve basically been playing against ourselves and so far we are winning.”
In game one, the Mustangs kept things close early, but the Rams used a 6-1 put the game away. Game two saw five lead changes early on, but the Rams went on an 11-3 run to bring the score to 23-14 and cruised to the 30-21 win. Game four was more of the same. The Mustangs trailed by just two at 17-15, but a 10-2 run gave Texas Wesleyan a commanding 27-19 lead. The Rams went on to take the game at 30-21.
Rachel Loftin recorded a game-high 15 kills and 8 blocks. Bela Gaulberto added 13 kills of her own. Whitney Johansen recorded 39 assists, and Susan Taylor had 18 digs.
With the win, Texas Wesleyan improved to 17-3 overall and 10-0 in RRAC play. The Mustangs fell to 13-12 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
The Rams will return to the court next Saturday when they host Bacon College in another RRAC contest. That match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in the Sid Richardson Center. |
