VILLASENOR LIFTS RAMS, 2-1
October 21, 2005

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team entered the day in third place in the Red River Athletic Conference standings, taking on second place College of the Southwest which held a slim half-game lead on the Rams.  The Rams overtook the Mustangs in the standings with a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory.

The Mustangs got on the board first after Jarred Zitt drew a foul in the box.  Mariano Sapien converted the ensuing penalty kick with 29:19 remaining in the first half.  Six minutes later Christian Villasenor collected a pass from Seth Mullins and found the back of the net to tie the game at one.  Well-played defense would keep the game tied throughout regulation.

In the overtime period, Villasenor came through again.  He netted the golden goal just 45 seconds into the extra period with an assist to Ricky Gallardo to lift the Rams to the win.

Texas Wesleyan improved to 7-5-1 overall and 5-1 in RRAC play while College of the Southwest fell to 8-6 and 4-2.

“Christian had a great game,” said Head Coach Steve Jones.  “We tried to isolate him one-on-one and it worked today.  We did not use him enough in the second half but he made some magic in the overtime.”

Jones went on to praise both teams.  “They were counter attacking, but we were able to win the ball in the midfield.  We minimized our mistakes on defense and that was a key.  Tomorrow is another big game.”

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they host UT-Permian Basin in their final home game of the season.  The Rams need another win on Senior Day as the Falcons have just two conference losses and are also vying for a regular season conference championship.  That game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be preceded by a women’s game.
