FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan men’s golf team hosted the eighth annual O.D. Bounds Golf Classic, sponsored by United Sports Technologies. The event was held at Diamond Oaks Country Club on Monday, and all proceeds benefited the golf program at Texas Wesleyan.
The foursome of Brian Bernt, Chris Flores, Rusty Pontius, and Blake Franke won the 1st-flight with a score of 122 while Dave Voskuil, Chris Sanchez, Keith Davis, and Frank Turella won the 2nd-flight with a card of 136. The tournament was followed by a dinner in the clubhouse as well as a raffle and auction that included items such as Ranger and Maverick tickets as well as golf clubs and several gift certificates for rounds of golf at area courses. Thirty-four teams participated in the event, which was attended by numerous alumni, friends, and family. Among the many notable alumni who participated was current PGA tour member Ian Leggatt, who won the 2002 Touchstone Energy Tuscon Open.
The O.D. Bounds Endowment has netted approximately $100,000 in eight years of existence. “This was the best turnout we have ever had,” said Head Coach Kevin Millikan. “We could not do it without the help of the committee, the Bounds family, and all of the former players who put so much hard work into make this event a success.”
The tournament is named for Orrin Davis Bounds Jr. who served as head coach for the Rams for 40 years and was the first coach to ever be inducted into the NAIA Golf Hall of Fame as well as the first person inducted into the Texas Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame. Bounds, who passed away last year, led the Rams to 109 tournament victories including three national championships. His legacy will be felt at Texas Wesleyan for many years to come. The Rams honored his memory throughout the day, perhaps most poignantly by having players use his putter on the 18th green.
