EDMOND, OK: The Texas Wesleyan University golf team improved on their first round score by 19 strokes in the final round of the Comfort Inn and Suites classic hosted by Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday. The tournament also marked the end of the fall season for the Rams.
The hosting Eagles took the team title with a 36-hole card of 585. The Rams finished in 3rd place with a score of 603. Oklahoma Christian’s Fernando Gonzales shot a tournament low 66 on Tuesday to take the individual title with a card of 141.
After a disappointing first-round 316, the Rams rebounded and had the second best score of the day with a 287 on Tuesday. For the tournament Justin Smith, Reino Deetlefs, and Lance Vasquez paced the Rams with scores of 149, 150, and 151 which was good for 12th, 14th, and 16th positions. Mitch Hendon shot 157 (41st) and Dan Hahn 159 (56th) to round out Texas Wesleyan’s card.
“We played much better today,” said Head Coach Kevin Millikan. “We are close to where we need to be, but we are not there yet. The thing I look at this fall is that only two NAIA schools beat us.” Of the NAIA competition the Rams saw in five tournaments this fall only Berry College and Oklahoma Christian posted better scores than Texas Wesleyan.
