DALLAS, TX: The Red River Athletic Conference announced the 2005 women’s soccer All-Conference team today. Texas Wesleyan University players represented half of the first team and placed an even eight on the 1st and 2nd-teams combined. In addition, Brianna McKernon was named Co-Newcomer of the Year and Steve Jones was named Co-Coach of the Year.
Jessica Carrion was a 1st-team selection for the fourth consecutive year, while Loren Clark and Nicole Richardson made the list for the second straight year. Heather Fowler had been named 2nd-team each of the previous two years, and Allie Heafner was a 2nd-team selection last season. Both were placed on the 1st-team this year. For both Brianna McKernon and Holly Rowland it was their first selection. Meanwhile, Aubrey Rice took home 2nd-team honors.
Carrion, a senior forward, has carved out a significant place in the Lady Rams record book. She currently holds the records for goals in a game (6, 2002), goals in a season (29, 2003), goals in a career (73), points in a game (12, 2002), points in a season (62, 2003), and points in a career (162). This season she leads the team with 11 goals and ranks third with 24 points. Her .69 goals per game also rank third in the conference.
Clark, a sophomore forward, currently leads the team with 11 goals and 28 points. Her .69 goals and 1.75 points per game both rank third in the conference. Richardson, a senior defender, has followed her Newcomer of the Year performance of a year ago with another impressive season. She currently leads the team with 11 assists and ranks second with 7 goals and 25 points. Her .69 assists per game are second in the conference, and her 3 assists against Bellhaven College tied the school record for assists in a single game.
Fowler, a junior defender, Heafner, a sophomore defender, and Rice, a sophomore defender, have helped the team to a school record six shutouts this season. Rowland received credit for 2.5 shutouts in goal and has posted an outstanding record of 7-1-0.
For the second straight year the Rams boast the conference’s Newcomer of the Year. McKernon, a freshman midfielder, ranks second on the team with eight assists and fourth with 22 points. Her .50 assists rank third in the conference.
For Head Coach Steve Jones this was his fourth Red-River Coach of the Year award, but first with The Lady Rams. Coach Jones has led the Lady Rams to school records with 12 wins, a five-game winning streak, and six shutouts.
The Lady Rams return to action on Friday when they take on rival Northwood in an RRAC Semifinal matchup. That game is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. in Laredo, TX.
