RAMS WIN IN OVERTIME:

ADVANCE TO FINAL
November 4, 2005

LAREDO, TX:  When the Texas Wesleyan men’s soccer team (10-6-1) met the College of the Southwest (11-7) during the regular season, the Rams came away with a 2-1 overtime victory.  Today, in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals the two teams played to an identical result.

The two teams battled through a scoreless half, and in the 59th minute Ryan Landers found Christian Villasenor who scored to give Texas Wesleyan a 1-0 advantage.  However, just six minutes later, Edgar Mendoza hit Mariano Sapien for the equalizer.  Defense prevailed for the rest of regulation as the two teams combined for eight shots in the second half.

With 3:19 remaining in the overtime period, Jose Melendez bent a free kick into the net for the golden goal.

With the win, the Rams advance to the Red River Championship for the first time in school history.  They will face UT-Permian Basin in that final on Saturday.  That match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 in Laredo, TX.
