LAREDO, TX: Earlier this season the Northwood University women’s soccer team (8-6) took a 3-2 win over Texas Wesleyan (13-4). On Friday, the Lady Rams got a little payback in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. Texas Wesleyan faced Northwood in another nail-biter, this time taking a 1-0 win to advance to the conference final on Saturday.
This thrilling battle of rivals lived up to the billing. The Lady Rams scored the lone goal of the game when Nicole Richardson converted a penalty kick in the with 12:19 remaining. Meanwhile, the Texas Wesleyan defense proved to be too much to handle as they notched their seventh shutout of the season. Holly Rowland made three saves in goal for the Rams.
The win marked the first for the Lady Rams in RRAC Tournament play and vaulted them into the conference final. Texas Wesleyan will take on the host team Texas A&M International, who defeated College of the Southwest in the other semifinal, at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday with the conference championship on the line.
