November 15, 2005

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK:  The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (2-2) traveled to Oklahoma City today to take on Oklahoma City University (3-3).  It marked the second of three consecutive contests against ranked opponents for the Rams.  The 15th ranked Rams led for much of the contest, but a late surge lifted the 13th ranked Stars to an 89-81 win.

The Rams came out firing in the first half.  They shot 53% from the field and 55% from long range, and went to the locker room with a comfortable 45-38 lead.

In the second half, OCU took the lead by cooling the Rams offense and finding their way to the charity stripe.  Texas Wesleyan shot 42% from the field and 47% from three down the stretch.  OCU hit 18-of-25 free throws including 15-of-20 in the second half while Texas Wesleyan scored just six points from the line (6-8).

OCU closed the game on a 10-2 run.  Ryan Godwin hit a three with 2:17 left to give the Stars an 82-79 lead. Texas Wesleyan’s Khayri McKinney hit a layup to close the margin to 82-81, but Dawud Drew responded with a pair of free throws to stretch the margin to three points (84-81) with 1:10 remaining.  In the final minute, the Rams missed four three-pointers while the Stars hit 5-of-6 free throws.

McKinney and Ben Hunt led the way offensively for Texas Wesleyan.  McKinney scored 29 points on 11-18 shooting including 7-13 from three-point range.  Hunt went for 27 points on 10-19 shooting including 6-10 from behind the arc.  Brad Schilder added 12 points for the Rams.  Godwin led all scorers with 31 points for OCU.

The Rams continue their road trip when they take on #10 LSU-Shreveport on Thursday.  That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Shreveport, LA.
