CAVS STOP LADY RAMS
November 29, 2005

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball teams (1-4) suffered a 63-54 loss at the hands of the St. Gregory’s University Cavaliers (4-3) at the Sid Richardson Center on Tuesday.

The game was very tight throughout the first half as the two teams played through five ties and seven lead changes.  The game was tied at 29 when SGU’s Diana Canaver hit a layup in the closing seconds to send the Cavaliers to the locker room with a 31-29 advantage.

The Cavaliers jumped out to a 37-31 lead in the second half, but a jumper from Brittany Helton and a three from Kori Yates sliced the deficit to a single point at 37-36.  After an SGU free throw, Helton hit a three to put the Rams on top 39-38 with 11:57 to play.  Neither team led by more than four points until a layup from Lacy Monroe put SGU ahead 53-47 with 5:47 on the clock.  The Cavaliers lead swelled to ten points at 59-49 and they held on for the 63-54 win.

Sheleatha Simmons led the Lady Rams with 11 points.  Shawndrika Courtney just missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 boards.  SGU’s Diana Canaver led all scorers with 17 points, while Lacy Monroe added 13 for the Cavaliers.

The Lady Rams return to action on Saturday, December 3, when they host Jarvis Christian College in their first Red River Athletic Conference contest of the season.  That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
