SAN DIEGO, CA: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team started on the right foot at the NAIA National Tournament on Wednesday. In their opening match, the Lady Rams faced Iowa Wesleyan and took a 3-0 victory over the Tigers with scores of 30-24, 30-20, and 30-22.
Misty Tarbet led the Lady Rams with 16 kills, while Rachel Loftin finished with 15 and Bela Gaulberto contributed 11. Loftin also recorded three blocks and a pair of aces. Whitney Johansen had an outstanding 53 assists, just one shy of her season-high set against Texas A&M International on November 11. Ashley Mock led the squad with 17 digs. Susan Taylor recorded 13 digs.
With the win, the Lady Rams improved to 32-4 overall and 1-0 in pool D. The Tigers fell to 22-11 overall and 0-2 in the tournament after losing 3-1 against Dordt College Tuesday afternoon. Pool play consists of four pools of five teams each. Each pool is a round robin style tournament, and the top two teams from each tournament advance to the quarterfinals on Friday.
Texas Wesleyan will play a pair of matches on Thursday. They begin with #4 Dordt College at 3:30 p.m. before facing #5 Missouri Baptist at 10:15 p.m. The match against Dordt will be broadcast live on the internet through the Dordt College website. A link to the broadcast will be available on the Lady Rams website at www.ramsports.net as well.
