SAN DIEGO, CA: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (35-4) finished pool play in the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament with a perfect 4-0 record after defeating the host team, Point Loma Nazarene, 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-19). The Lady Rams are the only unseeded team that remains undefeated in the tournament.
The Lady Rams took their most convincing win of the tournament by taking game one 30-18. The Sea Lions rebounded to make game two close, but could not overcome the Wesleyan offense and fell 30-26. The Lady Rams then closed out the match with a 30-19 win.
Rachel Loftin led the way with 14 kills. Misty Tarbet finished with 12 kills. Whitney Johansen and Sandra Ayala each had a double-double. Johansen recorded 41 assists and 11 digs. Ayala had 14 kills and 12 digs. Susan Taylor led the team with 29 digs and Brandi Hatcher led the way with 4 service aces in addition to her 12 digs.
With the win, Texas Wesleyan improved to 35-4 on the season and 4-0 in the tournament. Point Loma fell to 22-17 overall and 1-3 in tournament play.
Of the remaining teams, Texas Wesleyan is the only unseeded team that is still undefeated, and TWU and Red River Conference Rival Houston Baptist are the only unseeded teams that have advanced to the quarterfinal round.
Fifth seeded Missouri Baptist finished second behind the Rams in Pool D with a 3-1 record to advance. #1 Fresno Pacific, #2 California Baptist, #3 Madonna, #6 National American, and #7 Colombia round out the Elite Eight. Fresno Pacific and Colombia join the Lady Rams with unscathed 4-0 records.
The Lady Rams will play 3rd seeded Madonna in the quarterfinals. Madonna advanced with a 3-1 record in Pool C. That match is scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. central time on Friday.
