SAN DIEGO, CA: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team breezed through pool play in the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. They did not drop a single game as they took wins over Iowa Wesleyan, Dordt, Missouri Baptist, and Point Loma. For the second consecutive year, the Lady Rams advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament. Unfortunately, just as last season, they hit a roadblock in the Elite Eight. Third seeded Madonna University (MI) took a 3-1 win over Texas Wesleyan ending an outstanding season.
The Lady Rams came up just short in game one as Madonna took a 30-28 win. The Crusaders then took command of the match with a 30-21 win in game two. The Lady Rams did not go quietly as they made things interesting with a 30-23 win in game three. However, Texas Wesleyan ran out of gas in game four, and Madonna closed the match out with a 30-15 win.
Rachel Loftin led the Lady Rams with 16 kills. Bella Gaulberto added 14 of her own, while Misty Tarbet finished with 11. Susan Taylor recorded an outstanding 30 digs. Whitney Johansen recorded another double-double with 44 assists and 13 digs.
The match marked the final collegiate game for three outstanding seniors. Rachel Loftin, Susan Taylor, and Whitney Johansen have each left their mark on Texas Wesleyan Volleyball. Loftin will graduate as the school’s career leader in kills with 1,779, while Taylor will do the same with a record mark in career digs (2,312). In their four years, Taylor and Loftin led Texas Wesleyan to an overall record of 123-28.
The Lady Rams finish the 2005 season as the #5 team in the nation for the second consecutive season. They rattled off a 30-match winning streak, after a 1-3 start, and lost just two matches in the remainder of the season. They hold an overall record of 35-5 (.875).
