FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (2-4) took a convincing 71-58 win over Jarvis Christian College (0-4) in their Red River Athletic Conference opener on Saturday.
The two teams battled through a very even first half, and Texas Wesleyan led 38-36 at the break.
Midway through the second half, the Lady Rams made their move. After Jarvis’ Sheree Smiling converted a layup to bring her team within a pair at 50-48 with 12:24 remaining, the Lady Rams went on a 9-0 run to open a comfortable 59-48 lead with just over seven minutes remaining. The run was highlighted by six points from Pilar Pinkus. From that point, Jarvis was unable to cut the lead to fewer than nine points. Pinkus scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half to lead the Lady Rams to the 71-58 win.
The Lady Bulldogs won the battle of the boards 40-36, but Texas Wesleyan benefited from 30 Jarvis turnovers.
Pinkus led all scorers with 18 points. Shawndrika Courtney added 11 and Britney Helton scored 10 for the Lady Rams. Britni Robertson led the Bulldogs with 15 points while Louise Ukele recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 boards.
The Lady Rams return to action on Monday, December 5, when they host Wiley College in RRAC action. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a men’s game.
