TYLER, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (3-8, 1-0 RRAC) opened Red River Athletic Conference play tonight against Texas College (4-5, 0-2) at John Tyler High School. The Lady Rams made it 1-0 in conference play by taking a 58-54 win.
In the first half, Texas College came out hot, shooting 48% from the field including 6-of-14 from long range on their way to a 38-24 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Lady Rams buckled down on defense, and did not allow a field goal until Toni Dickerson hit a three with 10:20 on the clock. Prior to that, Texas Wesleyan used an 18-2 run to erase a 14-point deficit and take a 42-40 edge.
With 6:30 to play, two free throws from Milica Rogic and a three from Kim Gatlin gave the Lady Rams a 47-44 advantage. Texas College closed to within a pair, 56-54 with 24 seconds to play, but Harry Keegan drained two free throws to ice the 58-54 win.
Texas Wesleyan held the Lady Steers to just 12% shooting in the second half, while shooting 34% including 4-of-8 from three-point range in the period.
Kim Gatlin led the Lady Rams with a career-high 24 points while Nastassia Brown turned in an impressive 12 points and 13 rebounds. Erica Delley led the Lady Steers with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan returns to action on Saturday, January 6, when they travel to Waxahachie, TX, to take on Southwestern Assemblies of God University in RRAC action. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. |
