WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (3-9, 1-1 RRAC) nearly pulled off an improbable comeback against Southwestern Assemblies of God University (3-7, 1-2) at the Full Life Center on Saturday. The Lions held on for a 67-62 win in the contest after leading by as many as 18 points in the second half.
In the first half, Evelyn Johnson scored 17 of her game-high 31 points and SAGU shot 52% from the field on their way to a 33-24 lead at the break.
In the second half, SAGU stretched that lead to as many as 18 at 52-34 midway through the period. With the score at 58-44, a jumper from Jennifer Peoples sparked a string of seven unanswered points for the Lady Rams who closed to within seven at 58-51.
SAGU continued to lead by eight, 63-55, in the final minute, but Texas Wesleyan was not done yet. A layup from Shawntay Anglin and a put-back from Moneke Smallwood closed the gap to four at 65-59 with 38 seconds to play. In those final seconds, Jordan McGuffin and Amanda Horres combined to go 4-for-4 from the line, and the Lions escaped with the 67-62 win.
Keegan Harry led the Rams with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Jennifer Peoples finished with nine points, all in the second half.
Johnson’s 31 led all scorers while Hores finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan won the battle-of-the-boards 36-34 and forced 26 turnovers; however, SAGU outshot the Rams 54%-38%.
Texas Wesleyan returns to action on Monday, when they host Paul Quinn College in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center. |
