LADY RAMS IMPROVE TO 2-1 IN RRAC

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (4-9) improved to 2-1 in RRAC play with a 67-62 win over Paul Quinn College (1-12, 0-3) on Saturday.

After eight ties in the first half, Paul Quinn’s Sharonda Goree sent the Tigers to the locker room with a 31-30 lead.

The game remained tight in the second half, until the Lady Rams gained some breathing room with an 8-2 run that brought the score to 52-45 midway through the period.  Paul Quinn then closed to within a point on a three from Goree with 2:49 to play, but Pilar Pinkus hit four straight free throws to bring the score to 61-56 with 1:07 remaining.

Another three from Chrystal DeBose put PQC within two, 63-61, with 14 seconds to go, but the Rams broke the press and Britannia Champion all but sealed the game with a layup on the fast break.  The Rams then held on for the 67-62 win.

The Rams out shot Paul Quinn 32%-28%, and posted a remarkable 63 rebounds.  Texas Wesleyan out scored Paul Quinn 39-16 in the paint, 17-2 on the fast break, and got 46 points off the bench compared to just 13 for Paul Quinn.

Three Lady Rams scored in double-figures off the bench.  Pinkus led the way with 15 points and seven boards.  Champion and Nastassia Brown each finished with 10.  Goree led Paul Quinn with 17 points while Victoria Hodges posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lady Rams return to action on Saturday, January 13, when they host 13th ranked Houston Baptist University.  That game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in the Sid Richardson Center.
