MARSHALL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (6-12, 4-4 RRAC) pulled out a thrilling 78-76 win in overtime against Red River Athletic Conference foe Wiley College (8-8, 3-6) on Thursday.
Texas Wesleyan led throughout the first half, but a steal from Wiley’s Ciara Sanders led to a layup from LaToya Murray that tied the game at 40 with under a minute to play. After a miss from the Lady Rams, Murray sent the Wildcats to the locker room with a 42-40 lead when she hit a jumper just outside the paint.
In the second half, Texas Wesleyan regained control at 49-48 on a Brittany Champion bucket with 11:40 on the clock. The Lady Rams led by as many as six points, 60-54, but Wiley’s Tahina Hughes tied the game at 65 with a jumper with 35 seconds on the clock that sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, Nastassia Brown hit two key free throws that gave Texas Wesleyan a 72-69 lead with 2:29 remaining. Still Wiley managed to tie the game at 72, 74, and 76. The Rams then brought the ball up the court and Brown converted a layup with two seconds left. Wiley got off a desperation three-point attempt, but the Rams survived for the 78-76 win.
Texas Wesleyan out shot the Wildcats 42%-35% in the game. They trailed 49-43 on the glass, but solid free throw shooting (28-40, 70%) helped the Rams on several occasions.
The Lady Rams were led by Nastassia Brown who matched her career-high with 21 points. Pilar Pinkus added 15 points while Brittany Champion scored 10. Christina Haywood just missed a double-double with eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Wiley’s LaToya Murray led all scorers with 30 points.
Texas Wesleyan returns to the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday, when they host Texas College in Red River Athletic Conference Action. That game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. |
