FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (7-12) improved to 5-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference with their third straight conference win on Saturday. The Lady Rams topped the Texas College Steers (8-10, 4-7) 59-51 in the Sid Richardson Center.
Texas Wesleyan shot just 23% from the field, but the game was won at the free throw line as the two teams were whistled for a combined 58 fouls. The Rams shot 74% (28-38) from the line, while the Steers managed just 56% (18-32).
Texas College started hot, quickly doubling up the Rams score at 12-6. That lead swelled to eleven, 17-6, before Texas Wesleyan scored eight unanswered points (six from Nastassia Brown) to get back into the contest. The Rams were able to stay close form that point, but continued to trail 29-23 at halftime.
The second half started with an 8-0 run that gave Texas Wesleyan their first lead since the game’s opening minutes. The game reached a bizarre moment with 6:46 on the clock. Coming out of a timeout after the Steer’s Linda Emeghebo’s fifth foul, Emeghebo hit a jumper to bring her team within a point at 40-39. Emeghebo was awarded the bucket, but the Steers received a technical foul for playing an ineligible player. Pilar Pinkus hit both free throws to give the Rams a little more breathing room at 42-39.
The game rolled through two more ties and two more lead changes before a pair of free throws from Kim Gatlin and one-of-two from Shawntay Anglin gave Texas Wesleyan a seven-point lead at 51-44 with just over a minute to play. The Rams hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final minute to seal the 59-51 win.
Brown led the Lady Rams with 10 points and six rebounds. Pilar Pinkus score 11 points for Texas Wesleyan. Texas College was led by Erica Delley who turned in a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Texas Wesleyan returns to action on Monday, February 5, when they travel to Moore, OK, to take on Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
