DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (9-14, 6-6 RRAC) dropped a tough 65-63 decision against Paul Quinn College (5-19, 3-10) at the Ellis Davis Field House on Monday.
In the first half, the Lady Rams shot 50% (14-28) from the field and controlled the period. Texas Wesleyan opened a 26-18 lead. Paul Quinn cut that margin to 27-24 with 2:41 on the clock, but the Rams closed the half on a 9-3 run to lead 36-27 at the break.
The Tigers held the Rams to just 34% shooting in the second half. With 2:21 to play, Texas Wesleyan’s Shawntay Anglin knifed to the rim for a layup that brought the game to its seventh tie at 58. However, a three from Victoria Hodges and a layup from Sharonda Goree gave Paul Quinn a five-point advantage.
Texas Wesleyan still had a chance in the final seconds, but Hodges knocked down a pair at the line with four seconds on the clock that iced the game at 65-60. Christina Haywood hit a three at the buzzer to account for the 65-63 final score.
The Rams wee led by a career-high 17 points from Christina Haywood. Shawntay Anglin added 13 while Nastassia Brown finished with 12. Hodges and Andrea Anderson led Paul Quinn with 16 points apiece.
The Lady Rams return to action with a Valentine’s Day meeting with Huston-Tillotson. That game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in the Sid Richardson Center. |
