FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (4-1) swept both ends of a doubleheader against Jarvis Christian College (1-5) on Friday. The Rams took game one 13-3 and game two 14-3.
The Bulldogs made things interesting in the early going. Unearned runs in the second and third gave Jarvis a 3-2 lead in game one. In the top of the fourth, Jarvis’ Ruben Perez tried to score on a ball back to the mound and bowled over Texas Wesleyan catcher Josh Vander Hey. Both benches emptied, but cooler heads prevailed. Vander Hey held onto the ball, Perez was thrown out, and the Rams came alive.
Jason Diaz gave the Rams the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run single. Texas Wesleyan exploded for eight runs on five hits, including a Billie Hicks home run, in the fifth to put the game away.
Setphen Kinsey (1-0) earned the win with three innings of relief. He allowed just one unearned run on two hits. Christian Giraud took the loss after allowing seven runs on ten hits in four innings pitched.
Diaz (3), Hicks (2), and Phelps (2), each recorded multiple RBI for the Rams.
The Rams continued to roll in game two, scoring four runs in the first and two in the second. Hicks cracked his second homer of the day and third of the season, a three-run shot, in the first, and added an RBI double in the second.
Jarvis came back with three runs in the fourth, but the Rams plated five more in the bottom of the inning. In that frame, Taylor Miller plated a pair with a triple, JR Phelps doubled, and Brad Henderson knocked in a run with a triple.
Matt Chutchian (1-0) worked two scoreless innings for the win. He struck out three and allowed just one hit. Juan Pachot took the loss after allowing nine runs on eight hits in two innings of work.
Hicks went 2-for-2 at the plate with five RBI and two runs scored. Taylor Miller went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
The Rams will host #28 Oklahoma Baptist at LaGrave Field on Saturday. Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
