LADY RAMS PUSH #21 HUSKIES
February 16, 2007

Box Score

HOUSTON, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (10-15, 7-7 RRAC) out scored #21 Houston Baptist (19-6, 12-3) by nine in the second half and nearly pulled off a stunning upset before falling 70-63 on Saturday.

Houston Baptist opened the game on a 16-2 run.  Nastassia Brown and Pilar Pinkus led an 8-2 run to close to single digits before, the Huskies turned it on again and pulled away at 35-16.  Houston Baptist shot 55% in the first half and led 41-25 at the break.

In the second half, the Rams shot 52% while holding the Huskies to just 36% from the floor.  The comeback began to seem possible when Pinkus cut the deficit to eight, 60-52, with a layup with just under three minutes to go.

Houston Baptist led by 11, 66-55, in the final minute, but a jumper from Pinkus and a three from Moneke Smallwood brought the score to a manageable 66-60 with 19 seconds to go.

The Rams fouled immediately, and Dominique Thomas missed both free throws.  However, Valencia Kuykendall got a huge offensive board and scored with 13 seconds on the clock.  Kim Gatlin drained a three on Texas Wesleyan’s next possession.  The Rams fouled again, but this time Thomas hit both free throws to ice the game at 70-63 with three seconds on the clock.

Brown led the Rams with 16 points and eight rebounds.  Pinkus added 14 points off the bench for Texas Wesleyan.  HBU was led by Kuykendall’s 24 points and 19 rebounds.

The Lady Rams return to action on Monday, when they travel to Austin, TX, to take on Huston-Tillotson University.  That game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
