February 24, 2007

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-16, 9-8 RRAC) survived a furious comeback by Bacone College (15-13, 7-10) and used a buzzer-beating jumper from Britannia Champion to take an 80-78 win in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.

The Rams held the Warriors to just 26% shooting in the first half and led 34-23 at the break.

In the second half, Texas Wesleyan used a 13-2 run to build an 18-point lead at 57-39.  That lead swelled to 22, 67-45, with 8:05 to play.

Eight Texas Wesleyan turnovers in the final eight minutes allowed the Warriors to get back into the game.  Eighteen unanswered points brought the score to 69-63 with just under five minutes remaining.

With 32 seconds remaining a layup from Jessica Jenkins cut the margin to a single point at 77-76.  On the next possession, Christina Haywood hit one-of-two from the line to make it a two-point game.  Pilar Pinkus came up with the offensive board on the second free throw, but the Rams turned the ball over and Charletta Jackson tied the game at 78 with 14 seconds to play.

The Rams held the ball for a final shot, and Champion released the game-winner from 15 feet away just before the buzzer.

Champion led the Lady Rams with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds.  Pinkus just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.  Kim Gatlin scored 16 points and Nastassia Brown finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Jenkins led all scorers with 22 points.

The Lady Rams will play their final regular season game on Monday when they host Langston University.  That game is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and will be preceded by Senior Day festivities.
