CAHMPION'S BUZZER-BEATER DELIVERS 80-78 WIN
February 24, 2007

Box Score

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-17, 9-9 RRAC) was unable to stop Langston University’s (26-3, 18-0) unblemished run through the Red River Athletic Conference.  The Lady Lions defeated the Lady Rams 73-58 on Monday.

Prior to the game, Texas Wesleyan honored three seniors who were playing in their final home game.  Pilar Pinkus, Christina Haywood, and Nastassia Brown have each made outstanding contributions to the Lady Rams Basketball program.

Christina Haywood made the most of her night.  The Lady Rams put up a good fight behind a career-high 22 points from Haywood.  The Rams trailed 19-15 before five unanswered points brought the margin to double-figures.  Langston led 33-20 at the break.

Texas Wesleyan nearly went point for point with the Lions in the second half.  The Lion’s lead swelled to as many as 20 points, but a 12-3 run cut the margin down to 52-43 with 6:07 to play.

Langston scored the next seven points, but the Rams clawed to within 65-54 with 1:15 on the clock.  However, Langston knocked down all four of their free throws in the final minute to shut the door on the 73-58 win.

The Lions shot 53% from the floor, but Texas Wesleyan forced 24 turnovers in the game.

Haywood’s career night of 22 points led the way.  Nastassia Brown finished with 16 points and nine rebounds.  Jenissa Harris led Langston with 18 points.  Mataya McBath-Belvin finished with 17 points and six assists.

The Lady Rams will return to action on Thursday in quarterfinal action at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament in Waxahachie, Texas.  The fifth seeded Rams will take on either fourth seeded Jarvis Christian College at 3:00 p.m.  The Rams and Bulldogs have split a pair of games this season, each winning on the road.
