WAXAHACHIE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University women’s basketball team (12-18) suffered a 52-47 loss at the hands of Jarvis Christian College (13-12) in first round action at the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday.
Jarvis Christian shot 41% in the first half and led 31-17 at the break.
In the second half, the Rams stepped up on defense holding the Bulldogs to just 26% in the frame. Pilar Pinkus cut the deficit to single digits at 33-25 with 13:20 to play. Later a 9-2 run brought the Rams very much into the ballgame at 44-42 with just 4:32 on the clock.
Nastassia Brown cut the margin to a single point, 46-45, when she hit a pair at the line with a minute and a half remaining. After two free throws from Jarvis, Brown scored again to pull the Rams within one at 48-47, but Jarvis answered once again and held on for the 52-47 win.
Nastassia Brown finished her career with a 16th double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds. Ashley Brooks led the Bulldogs with 16 points while Daiana Canaver posted 12 points and 10 boards.
The Rams dominated the boards 49-32, but the Bulldogs hot shooting in the first half combined with a defense that forced 28 turnovers prevailed in the game.
The loss dropped the Lady Rams to 12-18 on the season. |
