DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (18-4, 1-0 RRAC), ranked tenth in the nation, took the first game of a three-game Red River Athletic Conference series with Paul Quinn College (5-27, 0-1) on Friday. The Rams took a 7-4 win at Tiger Field.
Brandon Frazier led the game off with a double to left and gave the Rams a 1-0 lead when he scored on a ground ball from Ryan Jacobi. Texas Wesleyan got a run on a sacrifice fly from Ross Elmore in the second and another on an RBI double from Josh Vander Hey in the third.
Jason Diaz led off the fourth inning with a single, advanced to second on an error, stole third, and scored when the throw got past the Paul Quinn third baseman. The Rams added a run in the frame on an RBI single from Antoine Cole.
Singles from Jason Curry and Leo Sotero brought the score to 5-2 in the fourth inning. Curry’s third hit of the day knocked in Shawn Pennington to bring the Tigers within two in the fifth, and an RBI single from Johnathan Thomas in the sixth brought the score to 5-4.
Texas Wesleyan used a Paul Quinn error and an RBI single from Jacobi to score two insurance runs in the seventh.
Weston Wood (3-0) earned the win after allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits while striking out four in six innings of work. Jesse Wright worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Hayden Lackey recorded the final out of the game for his eighth save of the season.
With his appearance in today’s game, Lackey, a junior from Duncanville, TX, tied the Texas Wesleyan record with 56 career appearances. Lackey is already the school’s record holder with eight saves in a season and 15 in his career.
Diaz and Cole led the Rams at the plate with two hits a piece while Jacobi added two RBI. Curry went 3-for-4 with three singles for the Tigers.
The two teams will complete their series with a doubleheader at LaGrave Field on Saturday. Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. |
