HOBBS, NM: The eighth ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (21-4, 4-0 RRAC) needed eight innings to finish off a 19-4 conference win over College of the Southwest (13-18, 1-3) on Friday. The Rams pounded out 17 hits and plated 11 runs in the eighth inning.
Josh Vander Hey gave the Rams an early lead with a three-run homer in the top of the first. Ryan Riddle made that lead stand up as he shutout the Mustangs for the first six innings.
In the top of the sixth, Ross Elmore led off with an infield single and scored on single from Taylor Miller. The Rams made it 8-0 with a four run frame highlighted by a leadoff homer from Brandon Frazier in the seventh.
The Mustangs broke out with four runs on four hits including a two-run home run from Brett Crossland in the bottom of the seventh, but the Rams responded by scoring eleven runs on seven hits in the eighth.
The Rams sent 15 hitters to the plate in the inning, and got a grand slam from Chris Palmer in his second at bate of the frame.
Riddle improved to 4-0 on the year after allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out nine in 6.2 innings pitched.
Frazier went 4-for-5 with a home run and two doubles while Ryan Jacobi went 3-for-5 at the plate. Josh Vander Hey added four RBI, while Palmer went 2-for-2 with 4 RBI in the eighth inning alone.
The Rams and Mustangs will finish their series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start. |
