HOBBS, NM: The eighth ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (23-4, 6-0 RRAC) completed a three-game sweep of College of the Southwest (13-20, 1-5) by taking both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Rams dominated game one 18-3 and took the nightcap 4-1.
Game one was very similar to Friday’s contest. The Rams held a 7-3 advantage going into the seventh when they exploded for 11 runs on nine hits. In all they totaled 18 hits in the game.
RBI singles from Billie Hicks in the first and Jason Diaz in the second put the Rams on top 2-0. Brandon Frazier singled in the fifth and scored on an error to move the lead to 3-0, but the Mustangs plated two in the bottom of the fifth.
The Rams began to heat up in the sixth with a three-run homer from Chris Palmer and an RBI single from Frazier.
After CSW scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, the Rams sent 14 men to the plate in the seventh and used a two-run double from Diaz, an RBI triple from Brad Henderson, and a two-run homer from Jeremy Howard to put the game well out of reach at 18-3.
Weston Wood (4-0) got the win after allowing two runs on four hits in five innings of work. Brandon Frazier turned in a second consecutive 4-for-5 day. Hicks added three hits while Palmer finished with four RBI and Diaz knocked in three.
Palmer gave the Rams a 3-0 lead in game two with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. An RBI single from Diaz in the sixth made it 4-0. That was plenty of support for Caleb Thomas who was outstanding on the hill for Texas Wesleyan.
Thomas allowed just three hits through seven innings. The Mustangs scored a run on three hits in the seventh, but it was not enough.
Thomas improved to 7-1 on the season after allowing one run on six hits in 7.1 innings of work. Hayden Lackey came, with the tying run at the plate and recorded the final out to pick up his ninth save of the year.
Chris Palmer stayed hot with a 2-for-4 game at the plate including his three-run blast in the fourth.
The Rams return to the field on Tuesday, when they travel to Abilene, TX, to take on McMurray University. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. |
