COLUMBUS, OH: The Texas Wesleyan University table tennis team ran its national championship total to five on day two of the 2007 ACUI/NCTTA National Collegiate Table Tennis Championships at Ohio State University. The Rams have swept all of the events so far, with the co-ed and women’s team titles yet to be decided.
After wrapping up the women’s doubles final on Friday. Texas Wesleyan ran the gamet on Saturday. The took titles in men’s doubles, mixed doubles, men’s singles, and women’s singles.
Women’s singles featured a very interesting matchup. Co-head coach Jasna Reed defeated her 2004 doubles Olympic teammate Whitney Ping of Stanford University in a semifinal match. In the other semifinal, Texas Wesleyan’s Ines Perhoc topped Stanford’s Atha Fong. That set up an all-TWU final between Reed and Perhoc who both hail from Zagreb, Croatia. In this time instance the master defeated the pupil as Reed took her third collegiate table tennis women’s singles national title.
In men’s singles, Texas Wesleyan newcomer Mark Hazinski defeated his teammate Carlos Chui to reach the final. Meanwhile, Princeton University’s Adam Hugh beat the Rams Ludovic Gombos in the other semifinal to set up a much anticipated final match.
Rams fans will remember that in the 2006 final, Texas Wesleyan’s senior and team MVP Eric Owens defeated Hugh for the title. This time the TWU freshman, Hazinski was up to the task, taking his first individual collegiate national championship.
Mixed doubles was an all Texas Wesleyan affair. In fact the Rams featured three of the final four teams. The combination of singles champions Hazinski and Reed rolled to the title, topping teammates Chui and Perhoc.
The Lady Rams will play in Sunday’s team semifinal while the co-ed team will continue in the quarterfinal round on Sunday.
