FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (10-25, 3-9 RRAC) gave a very strong effort against the 10th ranked Houston Baptist Huskies (26-6, 11-3) at Sycamore Park on Friday. The Lady Rams fell 5-1 in game one and 9-2 in extra innings in game two.
In game one, the Huskies got back-to-back home runs from AJ DeVries and Cheri Wood in the first inning. That was plenty of support for Wood who allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven to get the win.
The Lady Rams plated a run on an RBI single from Ariel Raley to cut the score to 3-1 in the third, but HBU added runs in the fifth and sixth to pull away.
Ashley Oldham (5-7) allowed five runs, four earned, on 10 hits in 5.2 innings pitched. Raley and Elizabeth Brady each went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Game two was a thrilling pitcher’s duel. The Huskies used two walks and a sac fly to score a run in the first inning, but Michelle Jones allowed just two runs on three hits through seven innnings for the Lady Rams.
The Rams used singles from Lindsey Molinar and Raley to tie the game in the third inning. HBU got the lead back with an RBI single from DeVries in the fifth, but singles from Raley and Alicia Mendoza tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
The game remained tied at two in the seventh. Texas Wesleyan got runners to first and third in the bottom of the seventh, but could not score and the game went to extra innings.
In the eighth, the Huskies finally broke through against a tiring Jones. HBU plated seven runs on seven hits to run away with the 9-2 win.
Jones (2-8) allowed seven runs on eight hits while striking out eight in 7.1 innings pitched. Wood (16-1) got the win with three shutout innings of relief work.
Brooke McNabb and Ariel Raley led the Lady Rams at the plate with two hits a piece.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Tuesday when the travel to Denton, TX, to take on Texas Woman’s University. Game one is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. |
