FINAL ROUND WASHED OUT:

RAMS WIN 4th STRAIGHT RRAC TITLE

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK:  Tuesday’s third and final round at the Red River Athletic Conference and Region VI Men’s Golf Tournament was cancelled due to rain.  The field completed 16 ½  holes before heavy rain fell and the round was canceled.  As a result, Texas Wesleyan finished third in the Region VI tournament while taking their fourth straight RRAC title.

The Rams needed only to save par over the final 1 ½ holes to pass top ranked Oklahoma Christian, but mother nature intervened.

The 13-team field featured five team’s ranked in the NAIA’s top-11: #1 Oklahoma Christian, #2 Oklahoma City, #3 Wayland Baptist, #10 Northwood, and #11 Texas Wesleyan.

Oklahoma City shot 278 in each of the first two rounds to lead the field at 556 overall.  Oklahoma Christian finished second at 583 while the Rams were just four shots back at 587.

Oklahoma City’s Daniel Mitchell was the Region VI medallist after shooting the two low rounds of the tournament at 68 and 67 (135).

Texas Wesleyan’s Dan Hahn tied for 5th at 142, while Ryan Stephens finished 8th at 144.  Kevin Doskocil also cracked the top-10.  Doskocil tied for 9th at 145.  Mitch Hendon and Will Woodring both shot 157 and tied for 43rd.

The Rams defeated 10th ranked Northwood by 13 strokes for the conference title.  That win should vault the Rams past the Knights and into the NAIA’s top-10 heading into next month’s NAIA national championship.

Northwood’s Nathan Leonardt was the RRAC medallist at 141 while Hahn finished second just one shot back.

The Rams will now wait for the field to be announced for the 56th annual NAIA National Championship.  That tournament will be held May 22-25 at Indiana National in Plymouth, IN.

Entering this season, the Texas Wesleyan men’s golf program has qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 45 out of 52 years of membership, wining a record six titles and finishing outside of the top-10 just twice.  The program has also produced nine individual medallists.
