CEDAR HILL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (19-32, 12-12 RRAC) dropped a pair of Red River Athletic Conference games at the hands of Northwood University (31-14, 18-6) in their regular season finale on Saturday. The Knight’s took game one 6-1 and rallied for a 6-5 win in game two.
In game one, the Knight’s did most of the damage in the third inning when they scored five runs on five hits and an error. Northwood added an unearned run in the third.
The Lady Rams got on the board in the seventh with an RBI single from Angel Castro.
Ashley Oldham (8-10) suffered the loss after allowing six runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out four in six innings pitched. Kayla Maddox scattered eight hits over seven innings to pick up the win.
Rachel Bachelder, Ariel Raley, and Alicia Mendoza each collected a pair of hits for Texas Wesleyan.
The Rams controlled game two for the first four innings. However, they left 14 runners on base, and those missed scoring opporunites came back to haunt them.
An RBI single from Castro in the second inning and a two-run double from Elizabeth Brady in the third gave them a 3-0 lead.
A leadoff walk to Gertrude Jeffries in the bottom of the third led to the first run for the Knights. The Rams began to pull away by scoring two more runs in the fourth; however, they left the bases loaded.
An unearned run in the bottom of the fourth brought the score to 5-2. In the fifth, the Knights took a 6-5 lead by scoring four runs on two hits and two Texas Wesleyan errors.
Maddox came back to pitch the final two innings for Northwood. The Rams loaded the bases with one out in the sixth, but could not score. They threatened again in the seventh, getting two runners aboard with only one out, but could not push the tying run across the plate.
Michelle Jones (5-11) pitched well in the loss. Jones allowed six runs, only one earned, on nine hits while striking out two. After earning the win in game one, Maddox picked up the save with two scoreless innings of relief in game two.
Castro capped a solid day at the plate with a solid 3-for-4 performance for Texas Wesleyan.
At 12-12, Texas Wesleyan will be the fifth seed in next week’s Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. The tournament will be held May 4-5 in Farmer’s Branch, TX. |
