FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team, ranked 17th in the nation (NAIA), took on the defending American Association Champion Fort Worth Cats this afternoon in an exhibition contest at LaGrave Field. After getting over some early jitters, the Rams battled the Cats for several innings before the Cats pulled away for a 6-0 win.
Prior to the game, the Rams honored six seniors. JR Phelps, Chris Palmer, Ross Elmore, Weston Wood, Billie Hicks, and Jason Diaz played their final game at LaGrave Field on Sunday.
Terrence “T-Dog” Greene, an alumnus of the Texas Wesleyan Baseball Program led off for the Cats and reached on an error, but Jayson Rachuig recovered to strand Greene at first base.
The Rams got some offense going in the second with singles from Ryan Jacobi and Ross Elmore, but could not push a run across the plate. Jesse Wright worked a perfect bottom of the second.
A one-out double from John Allen got the Cats started in the fourth. They went on to plate a pair of runs on a grounder from Ben Maitland and an RBI single from Adam Miller. In the fifth, Allen made it 4-0 when he belted a two-run shot over the wall in left field.
The Cats added a run in the sixth and an unearned tally in the eighth for the 6-0 final score.
Nick Martin picked up the win with a perfect inning of relief. Aaron Wimpee was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in two innings pitched.
Allen went 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBI, and two runs scored for the Cats. Jacobi, Elmore, Brad Henderson, and J.R. Phelps all singled for Texas Wesleyan.
The Rams will return to action in next week’s Red River Athletic Conference Tournament in Cedar Hill, TX. Bacone College defeated College of the Southwest 7-0 on Saturday to move into a tie with Rams at 13-2 in conference play. By defeating the Rams in 2-of-3 games this season the Warriors win the tiebreaker with Texas Wesleyan and will be the top seed in the tournament as the RRAC North Division Champion.
The bracket and schedule for the tournament has not been released, but play will begin on Tuesday, May 1, on the campus of Northwood University. |
