FORT WORTH, TX: Texas Wesleyan University’s Hayden Lackey has been named Red River Athletic Conference pitcher of the week for the period of April 23-29. Lackey shared the award with Houston Baptist University’s Keith Brunson.
Lackey, a junior pitcher from Duncanville, TX, worked both ends of a doubleheader sweep for Texas Wesleyan against East Texas Baptist University. He picked up his third win of the season in the opener by allowing just one earned run and four hits in three innings of work as the Rams held on, 11-10. In the second game, he earned a save by getting the final five outs of the game without allowing a hit in a 4-1 win. Lackey established a new school mark for saves (12) in his 24th appearance of the season.
Brunson, a sophomore pitcher from Sugar Land, TX, claimed the victory in the opener of a double-header with Huston-Tillotson University (TX). He entered the win after scattering five hits and allowing just one unearned run in the final 4 1/3 innings.
Texas Wesleyan finished the regular season at 35-8 overall and 13-2 in conference play. Although they are the highest ranked team in the conference at 17th in the nation and 3rd in Region VI, they will be the third seed in the upcoming Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. Unranked Bacone College (13-2) holds the tiebreaker for the top seed by virtue of a 2-1 record against the Rams while unranked Houston Baptist (12-3) won the RRAC South Division.
Texas Wesleyan will open RRAC Tournament play this afternoon when they take on fourth seeded Huston-Tillotson University. Originally scheduled to be played at Northwood University, that game is now scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park. |
