Press Release

#17 RAMS FEATURE NINE ALL-RRAC PLAYERS
May 1, 2007

FORT WORTH, TX:  The Red River Athletic Conference has announced its 2007 All-Conference Baseball team.  With nine players among those honored, Texas Wesleyan University had more players recognized than any other institution.

Hayden Lackey led the way by being named RRAC Pitcher of the Year, becoming the second Ram to win the award in as many years and third in head coach Mike Jeffcoat’s tenure.  Lackey, a junior from Duncanville, TX, set a school record with 27 appearances last season.  With 24 appearances this season he has also broken the school’s career record with 67 appearances, and after posting a school record 12 saves this season he holds the Rams’ career mark in that category as well at 19.  This season he is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched.

Jason Diaz (Sr., 3B, Fort Worth, TX), Josh Vander Hey (Jr., C, Cypress, TX), Brandon Frazier (Jr., CF, Burleson, TX), Ryan Riddle (Jr., RHP, Bedford, TX), and Weston Wood (Sr., RHP, Temple, TX) all joined Lackey on the 1st-team All-RRAC.

Diaz has hit .397 while ranking among the nations leaders with 35 stolen bases in 38 tries and 51 runs scored.  This season Diaz has struck out just twice in 141 at bats.  Vander Hey is hitting .388 with 4 HR, and 53 RBI, while hitting safely in all but six of 43 games played (including an 0-1 with an RBI in last week’s doubleheader against East Texas Baptist).  Frazier is hitting .372 with a .462 OBP and 25 stolen bases.

Riddle is a perfect 7-0 with a 2.47 ERA and a team-high 66 strikeouts.  Wood earned his second straight 1st-team award by going 6-0 with a 3.13 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

Ross Elmore (Sr., 2B, Athens, TX), Billie Hicks (Sr., SS, Arlington, TX), and Caleb Thomas (Jr., RHP, Keller, TX) were each named to the 2nd-team.

Elmore is hitting .318 with 10 2Bs, 14 RBI, and 28 runs scored.  Hicks has hit .345 with a team-high six home runs to go with 29 RBI and 32 runs scored.  Thomas leads the team with nine wins while suffering just two losses and posting a 2.80 ERA.

Texas Wesleyan finished the regular season at 35-8 overall and 13-2 in conference play.  Although they are the highest ranked team in the conference at 17th in the nation and 3rd in Region VI, they will be the third seed in the upcoming Red River Athletic Conference Tournament.  Unranked Bacone College (13-2) holds the tiebreaker for the top seed by virtue of a 2-1 record against the Rams while unranked Houston Baptist (12-3) won the RRAC South Division.

Texas Wesleyan will open RRAC Tournament play this afternoon when they take on fourth seeded Huston-Tillotson University.  Originally scheduled to be played at Northwood University, that game is now scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at Sycamore Park.
