FARMERS BRANCH, TX:  The Texas Wesleyan University softball team (22-33) played four games and took three wins on day one of the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday.  They suffered a 4-0 loss to top seeded Houston Baptist, but took an 8-2 win over Texas College and a pair of 11-2 wins over College of the Southwest.  With the three wins, the Lady Rams advance to play Northwood in tomorrow’s semifinal.

The conference also announced its all-conference team.  Texas Wesleyan’s Ariel Raley and Brooke McNabb both earned 1st-team honors.

The Lady Rams opened the day against College of the Southwest.  Ashley Oldham (9-10) took the win after scattering six hits over six innings pitched.  She allowed just one earned run and struck out six.

Alicia Mendoza handled the brunt of the offense by going 4-for-4 with three doubles.  Tara Sharp added a pair of hits including a grand slam home run.  Lindsey Molinar, Rachel Bachelder, and Angel Castro each added a pair of hits for the Lady Rams.

The Rams then had a strong performance against Houston Baptist.  Michelle Jones allowed just three earned runs in a complete game performance.  She gave up just four hits; however, one of those hits was a three-run homer from Erika Vargas in the third inning.

The Rams then easily defeated Texas College, 8-2 in their first of two elimination games on the day.  Tara Sharp (7-2) got the win after working five innings and allowing one earned run on seven hits while striking out two.  Ariel Raley, Mendoza, and Maddie Williams each recorded a pair of hits in that game.

The final game of the night came against College of the Southwest and resulted in the same score.  The game was closer than the final score however.  Texas Wesleyan led 3-2 before exploding for eight runs in the sixth inning.

Jones (6-12) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four.  Oldham earned her first save of the year by tossing the final two innings and allowing just one hit.

Mendoza continued her domination of the Mustangs by going 4-for-4 again, and ripping yet another double.  Elizabeth Brady went 3-for-4 while Molinar finished 3-for-5.  Brooke McNabb was 2-for-5 with a grand slam, and Raley, Sharp, and Rachel Hampton each recorded a pair of hits.

The Rams will take on second-seeded Northwood at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at Oran Good Park in Framers Branch.  The winner of that game earns the right to face Houston Baptist in the conference championship as well as a bid to the Region VI Tournament.
