AURORA, CO: Texas Wesleyan University’s Ryan Stephens (Lakewood, CO) put on one of the most dominating performances in the 71-year history of the Colorado Golf Association Stroke Play Championship this weekend. Stephens who was a senior on the 2006-07 TWU men’s golf team mastered Murphy Creek Golf Course, finishing at 18-under par (270) to win the tournament by five strokes.
Stephens shot a final round of 67 to complete a fourth straight sub-par round (70-64-69-67). His card included 23 birdies and two eagles in 72 holes. His second round 64 kept him within two shots of the lead. His third round 69 gave him a one stroke lead over the University of San Diego’s Darrin Hall who finished second at 275.
Stephens’ name joins the likes of Hale Irwin, Steve Jones, and Brandt Jobe as past champions of the CGA Stroke Play Championship. Murphy Creek is scheduled to host the 2008 U.S. Amateur Public Links.
Last season, Stephens was the Rams’ most consistent performer and earned 2nd-team NAIA All-American honors. He led the team with a 73.8 scoring average, and posted four top-10 and two top-five finishes in 12 events. He will complete his degree at Texas Wesleyan in December.
