FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University volleyball team (13-6, 3-2) appeared to be in good shape up 2-0 against College of the Southwest (6-17, 3-2) in the Sid Richardson Center on Friday the 13th. However, the Mustangs controlled game three and staged incredible rallies in games four and five to take a 3-2 win.
Game one was tight as the two teams went through 13 ties and nine lead changes, but Texas Wesleyan used a 9-2 run to close out the game with a 30-24 win. In game two, the Rams got ahead early and used a 5-2 run late to pull away for a 30-25 win.
Everything changed in game three. The Mustangs started the game with six unanswered points and led by as many as ten at 18-8. Texas Wesleyan nearly pulled off a tremendous comeback. The Lady Rams pulled to within one at 27-28, then fought off a game-point, but eventually fell 30-28.
In game one, it was Texas Wesleyan that was off to the hot start. The Lady Rams led 5-0, but College of the Southwest rallied to lead 11-9. The Rams used a 5-0 run to take a 26-22 lead, but the Mustangs answered with their own 5-0 run to lead 27-26. The game was tied at 28 before CSW scored the final two and took another 30-28 win.
Game five proved to be a thriller. Texas Wesleyan took command with a 4-0 run to lead 13-11. The Rams then had a pair of match points at 14-12, but College of the Southwest would not be denied. The Mustangs eventually scratched out a 17-15 win to take the match.
Sandra Ayala recorded a double-double with 23 kills and 14 digs. Jennifer Irwin set career-highs with 76 assists and 26 digs. Jessica Colliau and Ashley Mock also set career-highs with 25 and 22 digs respectively.
The Rams return to action immediately. They will take on Huston-Tillotson University at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday in the Sid Richardson Center.
