HOUSTON, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (5-7-2, 4-2-1 RRAC) took a 2-1 win at Houston Baptist University in their regular season finale on Thursday. The Rams are hot at the right time. They have won three consecutive conference games and will enter next week’s Red River Athletic Conference Tournament as the third seed.
On a rain soaked field, the Rams were able to control the ball throughout the contest. They held a 2-0 lead before giving up a goal in the final minutes.
Senior defender Julio DeLaRosa got the Rams on the board when he converted a free kick from the right side in the 25th minute. Chase Richeson then netted the eventual game winner on a bomb from 25 yards out in the 60th minute. Pedro Zamarripa gave the Huskies some life when he scored in the 87th minute, but it was too late to complete a comeback.
“The guys played really well,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We made a mental error late there, but for the most part we were able to dominate the play. Now we’re just ready to get after it in the conference tournament.”
Texas College, Huston-Tillotson, Texas Wesleyan, and Houston Baptist have secured their spots in the RRAC Men’s Soccer tournament, which will be hosted by Northwood University in Cedar Hill, TX. College of the Southwest, Northwood, and Southwestern Assemblies of God are still vying for the final two spots.
As the third seed, Texas Wesleyan will play the sixth seed in a quarterfinal game on Monday.
