CEDAR HILL, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (6-8-2) fell just one win short of getting a chance to defend their Red River Athletic Conference Championship. The Rams suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of second seeded Huston-Tillotson University (11-3-1) in RRAC semifinal action on Tuesday.
Just seven minutes into the contest, H-TU seized the momentum when Saidu Varney headed a pass from Mario Orosco into the back of the net. That goal was the only tally of the first half.
In the second half, the Rams appeared to turn the tide when Julio DeLaRosa’s kick found its way to the net in the 53rd minute, but H-TU’s Frank Toscano scored a pair of goals down the stretch to put his team on top.
Senior goalkeeper, Thomas Hansen made nine saves in goal, but it was not enough to overcome a 25-14 shot differential.
“It’s been an up and down year,” said head coach Josh Gibbs. “We finished with everything on the field. I can’t fault the effort of any one of my guys. Not many teams get to end their season with a win and that’s too bad for these guys.”
The Rams finished the season with a record of 6-8-2 overall, and their conference record of 4-2-1 was good for the third seed in the tournament.
